New Logo
By admin | December 19, 2007
I have a new logo at Ask a Grower and I think it’s a beauty. A friend of ours designed it and hopefully it’s more attractive than the boring text that was the old header for the site.
I want to make the Forum look and feel more like the blog so I’ll hopefully be adding the new logo and changing the colors to match the Blog.

Ellepots with Pindstrup for Propagation
By admin | December 15, 2007
We are using Pindstrup for our ellepots this year and it is a terrific peat for propagation.
Pindstrup is a Danish company but the peat comes from Latvia. We aren’t using any additional amendments in our soil, just straight peat. This is good stuff.

Pansy Production
By admin | December 12, 2007
We are currently planting our 3rd batch of pansies for our spring production and I’m getting ready to really drop the temps on our first 2 batches.
My question is: How cold do you grow your pansies?
We let ours freeze, which I wasn’t thrilled about when we first tried it but, it works. So now we grow a very hardy and tough pansy flat that hold up really well in the early spring allowing our customers to have better success with our product.

Osteospermum Production: Dummen’s Summertime Purple
By admin | December 10, 2007
We are transplanting Osteospermum this week and I am very happy with our liners at this point. Check ‘em out. This is Dummen’s Summertime Purple propagated in a 25mm ellepot. Elle’s Rule!

Vegetative Annual Propagation: Rooting Under HID Lights
By admin | December 8, 2007
We are fortunate to have HID lights in our prop houses and, for us, it makes a big difference when our cuttings are rooted under supplemental lighting. We can initiate rooting and get the cuttings off of mist 1 - 3 days sooner when we use supplemental lighting.
Has anyone else seen similar results?

Cortez Burgundy: The Reverter
By admin | December 8, 2007
It’s too bad Cortez Burgundy reverts to red so often. It’s a nice plant with a good habit and, for some reason, lots of people seem to want a purple poinsettia. It sure beats Plum Pudding. I wish Cortez was a bit faster and a little less vigorous but it works.

Poinsettia Shipping
By admin | December 5, 2007
Points are finally starting to go. It’s been a slow start but they are moving now. From what I hear, it’s been slow everywhere this year. Have consumers cooled on the $3.00 commodity, big-box poinsettia? Are sales slow at independents as well?
What kind of poinsettia season are you having?

Visitor Interaction
By admin | December 4, 2007
I thought I would post about our visitor interaction, or lack thereof. I started this blog and the forum with the hopes that I could get growers together on the internet to discuss and solve our production problems and help each other out.
So I guess I’ll just come right out and ask for some audience participation.
How about it people?
Go to the Forum and contribute to the discussions (for the most part I’m just talking to myself but GrowerGuy from Cincy is pretty active on the forum). Just register and start asking and answering questions. We’re all going to get busy soon so I’m hoping that the traffic picks up and we can get a really strong community of growers interacting.

Poinsettias: Late bloomers
By admin | November 27, 2007
Does anyone know if running HID lights on poinsettia will speed up the bracts? I have a few that are slower than I’d like and I want to speed them up. Perhaps supplemental lighting will help….maybe?
Anyone?
