Crops
Reiger Begonias
Sunday, January 20th, 2008We propagate and finish a boatload of Reiger Begonias so you’re going to see me write about them a lot in the future. Right now we have a prop house full of them and we are transplanting them almost every week. We root them in a 25mm Elle arranged in a 3 x 17-strip tray. […]
Zonal Geranium Propagation: Dummen Survivor Series
Sunday, December 23rd, 2007Our first batch of Vegetative Geraniums are doing well so far. They’ve been in prop for about 10 days now and they are rooting well. We grow Dummen Geraniums and the picture below is from their Survivor Series. We propagate the cuttings using 25mm Elle’s in a strip tray that we can […]
Pansy Production
Wednesday, December 12th, 2007We are currently planting our 3rd batch of pansies for our spring production and I’m getting ready to really drop the temps on our first 2 batches.
My question is: How cold do you grow your pansies?
We let ours freeze, which I wasn’t thrilled about when we first tried it but, it works. So […]
Osteospermum Production: Dummen’s Summertime Purple
Monday, December 10th, 2007We are transplanting Osteospermum this week and I am very happy with our liners at this point. Check ‘em out. This is Dummen’s Summertime Purple propagated in a 25mm ellepot. Elle’s Rule!
Cortez Burgundy: The Reverter
Saturday, December 8th, 2007It’s too bad Cortez Burgundy reverts to red so often. It’s a nice plant with a good habit and, for some reason, lots of people seem to want a purple poinsettia. It sure beats Plum Pudding. I wish Cortez was a bit faster and a little less vigorous but it works.
Poinsettia Shipping
Wednesday, December 5th, 2007Points are finally starting to go. It’s been a slow start but they are moving now. From what I hear, it’s been slow everywhere this year. Have consumers cooled on the $3.00 commodity, big-box poinsettia? Are sales slow at independents as well?
What kind of poinsettia season are you having?
Ranunculus
Tuesday, November 20th, 2007We are planting up some Ranunculus right now to add another crop to our Pansy and other early bedding crops. I haven’t grown them in several years so it will be like growing them for the first time.
Any advice or cultural info for our readers would be much appreciated.
Poinsettia Update: 11/16/07
Sunday, November 18th, 2007These are a few pictures from our poinsettia crop. They are pretty much finished and now we are anxious to see them go.
Vegetative Annual Propagation: Osteospermum, New Guinea Impatiens and Ipomoea
Monday, November 12th, 2007Our osteo cuttings are looking good after 6 day in the prop house. No disease problems to speak of and they are starting to callus. We should see some roots starting in a 4-5 days. We are growing Dummen’s Summertime Osteospermum this spring and I have found that they are excellent in propagation and as […]
Pansy Plugs
Sunday, November 11th, 2007This week we will transplant our first batch of pansy plugs for our spring crop. We grew 288 plugs this year with a 6 week crop time in the plug. But I grew them cool and they will be 7 weeks old when we transplant. We have a topic started at the Ask a Grower […]
