Vegetative Annual Propagation: Rooting Under HID Lights
By admin | December 8, 2007
We are fortunate to have HID lights in our prop houses and, for us, it makes a big difference when our cuttings are rooted under supplemental lighting. We can initiate rooting and get the cuttings off of mist 1 - 3 days sooner when we use supplemental lighting.
Has anyone else seen similar results?

As a propagator in sunny Fla. it would seem peculiar to use hps lights, but we have been using them for 16 years. We get a 17 degree increase over outside temp under 4 layers of poly

Makes sense, especially this time of year, when the sun is so low to the horizon. At my former employer in Virginia, I also had to light many of my perennial cuttings to keep them from flowering instead of throwing roots.

It’s certainly a luxury to have light in our propagation areas but it really helps. we just stuck a bunch of geraniums and I’m running the lights from 4:00pm until 2:00am and this should take 2-3 day off of the rooting time.
