Poinsettia Production: Irrigating with Water Collectors
By admin | September 30, 2007
Well, I’ve been busy lately and haven’t been posting as often as I want to but I plan to return to regular posting right now. In the greenhouse, we’ve shipped nearly all our mums and it was a decent year so far. I won’t get too excited until they’re all gone but so far so good. As for our poinsettias, we have finished spacing all but our 4 inch and we’re doing well so with all our different sizes and varieties. They should all be initiated now and the plants will start to color up in the next few weeks so it’s critical that I continue to push fertilizer to them and build the plant while I have a chance. My biggest concern right now is that we are using water collectors to irrigate our crop this year and I have no experience using them.
I am trying to figure out how to keep from overwatering them and keep them uniform at the same time. I am also concerned about watering them overhead once the bracts start to unfold. If anyone has any advice or words of wisdom when it comes to growing poinsettias on water collectors, I’m all ears.

You have to do the irrigation in the morning. Pay attention to the moisture on the pots and the weather as well. it is better to apply moisture a little bit at a time, especially if you use automation. Check your EC regularly, especially if you have to rinse. You have to make sure that the rinsing will only rinse the folliage without diluting the feed. I always touch up/spot watering to ensure I have uniform corps. Check for any diseases since it is overhead watering and with water collector. I usually apply fungicide every two to three weeks to control, especially phytium and later on as weather gets colder, botrytis. Good luck

Dini,
Thanks for you feedback.
Do you always rinse off the feed?
Do you have any problems with residue from your water/fertilizer?
How often do you spray for Botrytis later in the year?
