Contract Greenhouse Growing: OFA Short Course

By admin | July 15, 2007

I spent the last two days at the OFA Short Course attending seminars and today at the Trade Show. I want to give a few highlights from an excellent seminar I attended today about contract growing. The focus of the seminar was how to be successful with the challenges of contract growing. As a grower who has done quite a bit of contract growing, I was very interested in the subject matter but overall I think this is an important and potentially lucrative trend within our industry. Contract growing a difficult thing to do as a grower because you have limitations and specific expectations placed upon you. You must have clear specifications for the product that you are producing and you must deliver the quality required if you are to be successful. This was all laid out in the seminar and the focus was on Bell Nursery in Maryland. They have created the most progressive and successful model in the industry and I think this model could be implemented in other parts of the country. Personally, I love contract growing because I can schedule my greenhouse space more effectively because I know when a certain amount of space is going to open up and I can plan ahead to fill that space up immediately. The only catch is when the weather causes delays in shipping and everything gets backed up. Of course this happens with our regular production as well so it’s not that big of a deal. I think contract growing is a large part of the future in this industry and it will only get bigger down the road.
