Better Weather
By admin | June 9, 2007
Like the rest of us in the Midwest, this week brought some cooler weather and with the temperate temps came decent sales. We have been able to ship more for this weekend than I thought. We are growing a pretty sizeable late season program including 8 inch annuals, 11 inch hanging baskets and an annual half-flat. All the basic annuals for the half flat; petunia, marigold, zinnia, salvia, begonia, impatiens, etc. We produced two batches of these and are almost through the first one. I guess all that worrying about slow sales in the late spring is starting to go away, but I won’t get too excited until I see more product on carts and outta here. I feel that the quality of our product has to be greater during the first and last 4 weeks of each season. In the first four weeks, we don’t ship a great deal but it must be very high quality product to set the tone for the year and to reassure our customers confidence in us as a supplier. I really believe that great quality early equals greater volume later. That goes for the late season as well. Retailers only want the nicest product in June. Specs are higher because the traffic in the garden centers is lower and sell through is not like May when everything with a flower sells. If you take the risk of producing a big late season crop, your quality had better be impeccable or you’ll eat a great deal of it. Of course it could be 95 degrees and very dry and then it won’t matter how great the product is.
