Shaded Garden Mums

By admin | June 7, 2007

Today I potted up some 8″ mums that we will force by blackclothing. In my experience, blackclothed (or shaded mums) tend to finish small and clubby and don’t have that same rounded, ball-shaped appearance that we all love in a garden mum. Because of this, I put 3 cuttings in a pot instead of the usual 1. Since these will go to our own retail space and we’re only growing a handful of them, three plants per 8″ pot is feasible. I plan to blackcloth them outside in an attempt to avoid any issues with heat delay and keep the nice rounded shape that a natural season mum would have. Shading mums inside a blackclothed greenhouse never seems to work well for me. I will keep them in the greenhouse, under HID mum lighting (10pm-2am), for 3 weeks and then move them outside for shading (3 more weeks) and flowering.

Example of Crop Schedule:

  • Transplant 3ppp into 8″ pot.
  • Grow on under HID mum lighting for 3 weeks of long days.
  • Take outside and final space. Shaded for 3 weeks or until visible buds appear.
  • 4 more weeks until open flowers.

I will try to post some pictures of our shaded mum crop from transplant to finish.

[…] growers will direct stick their garden mums but some of us stick our unrooted cuttings into liner trays. This year we used a 50 count ellepot […]
